The outlook for beef cattle farming in Vietnam is looking positive this year. According to a news story from the Vietnam Net Bridge, the country is seeking to improve its production of cattle and encourage more farmers to go into beef cattle farming.

In the report, Mr. La Ba Lich, chairman of the Vietnam Animal Feed Association, has suggested that the country can convert land areas that are unproductive for farming into grazing lands for beef cattle. On a similar note, Mr. Nguyen Dang Vang of the Animal Livestock Association of Vietnam pointed out the need to improve technology for processing agricultural by-products to serve as fodder.

The report also noted that part of the government’s plans to boost beef cattle farming includes increasing the access to high-quality cattle sperm for breeding with their livestock. In most cases, local livestock are bred with Sindhi breeds that can produce as much as 220 kilograms. however, breeding with Angus or Droughtmaster can raise the yield to as high as 330 kilograms.

As well, farmers will also be provided with better technology on fodder production using agricultural by-products. The setting up of small and medium-sized areas for livestock raising especially in the Central Highlands and the country’s northern mountain areas is also being planned.

Since last year, there has been a reported steady rise in the demand for beef in the Southeast Asian market. Vietnam imported over 180,000 cattle heads from Australia last year, according to a report from the ABC Rural. The demand for dairy products is also high among the Vietnamese with its increase from 8 to 28 percent since 2000.
