Climate-smart villages are coming to Vietnam, the TouiTre News reports. The news was released during a seminar-workshop on communicating climate change in Hanoi last November. The seminar was organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security Regional Program for Southeast Asia (CCAFS-SEA).

Specifically, the villages will be set up in the Ma Village in Yen Bahn District, Yen Bai Province in the north; the My Loi Village in Ky Anh District, Ha Tinh Province in the north-central region; and the Tra Hat Village in Vinh Loi District, Bac Lieu Province in the south. These regions are climate change hot-spots, the focus of the project.

The CCAFS which heads the initiative explains that the climate-smart villages are designed to enhance the capacity of farming communities in improving agricultural production while promoting resiliency and adaptation to climate change threats and impacts.

Among the key features of the village are access to weather information and forecasts to aid in the management and planning of agricultural activities; information dissemination on farming practices and techniques through popular and new media (cellphones); access to agricultural insurance programs; and support in irrigation and water system management.

Started in 2011, the project has set up climate-smart villages in Africa, Latin America and South Asia. In Southeast Asia, in addition to Vietnam, climate-smart villages have also been built in Laos and Cambodia. There are also reports of climate-smart villages to be set up in the Philippines.
