Project Information

Pest surveillance responsibility rests with the National Plant Protection Organizations (NPPOs), most of which conduct pest surveillance in a coordinated manner with public and private organizations. However, there is a lack of capacity in the surveillance especially in documented procedures for operational instructions and adequate expertise to carry out the survey. Information management on plant pests need to be strengthened, and this includes pest statistics and information collected from surveillance, laboratory inspection, and pest identification. Other activities need to be digitized for efficient utilization n pest risk analysis.

This project targets NPPOs of participating countries with the aim of strengthening the capacity of field surveillance and laboratory diagnostics and gaining public confidence in their ability to respond to pest emergencies more effectively. It is also expected to benefit traders of plant products through enhanced pest risk management. Farmers are expected to benefit from reduced risks of new pests.

It seeks to establish a training program that will improve human resources capacity, and a pest information system that willl allow for enhanced diagnostic capacity.
