Project Information

The project aimed to make shrimp brackish water aquaculture sustainable in order to increase households’ revenues and reduce rural depopulation while protecting the ecosystem.

Its immediate objectives included:

  • Confirm on a significant sample of sites the reliability of quantifiable relationships between shrimp production and ecological indicators, issued from previous research work (STD3);
  • Analyze farming practices and social behavior on the same sites in order to determine those allowing lowest environmental and economic costs;
  • Carry out mapping of mangrove vegetation, soil and intrusions and land use over the 3 sub-areas;
  • Implement and feed a database focused on farms, start point of future monitoring;
  • Increase capacity building of scientist, local fisheries authorities and farmers groups through a strong involvement in the program.
  • Provide the Vietnamese counterparts with the tools and methods making them able to devise a follow-up development project extended to the whole of the Mekong Delta.

The targeted groups were decentralized administrations and shrimp farmers in Ca Mau and Tra Vinh.
