Project Information

The overall objectives of the proposed initiative were to address food security issues and to improve the livelihoods of poor farmers through capacity building in rice post harvest technology.

The immediate objectives were to:

  • Reduce post harvest losses due to spoilage, wastage, and quality deterioration, and extend the length of period that farmers may store rice through extension of training and knowledge of effective and pesticide-free storage techniques;
  • Strengthen rice milling technology to reduce loss during milling and increase quality of milled rice;
  • Increase farmers' financial return on rice through better understanding of the rice market; and
  • Establish a network of post harvest practitioners that will continue to build post harvest information and technology, share market intelligence, and deliver information to poor farmers.
